The culture-ideology of consumerism proclaims, literally, that the meaning of life is to be found in the things that we possess. To consumer, therefore is to be fully alive, and to remain fully alive we must continuously consume, discard, consume… The point of economic activity for ordinary members of the system is simply to provide the resources to be consumers, and the point of political activity is to ensure, usually through political inactivity, that the conditions for consuming are maintained.
